The cellular c-fms oncogene is the cellular homolog of a viral oncogene called v-fms, which is encoded by SM-FeSV (Susan McDonough strain of Feline sarcoma virus).
fms encodes a transmembrane protein consisting of an extracellular ligand-binding domain of 512 amino acids, a transmembrane region of 25 amino acids, and a cytoplasmic domain of 435 amino acids. The cytoplasmic domain encoded a tyrosine-specific protein kinase activity. The human fms gene consists of 21 small exons interrupted by introns ranging in size from 6.3 kb to less than 0.1 kb.
