[endotoxin, LPS-induced, LPS-enhanced]
A term used to describe an essential lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. Together with phospholipids and membrane-bound proteins it is a constituent of the outer cell membrane. These lipopolysaccharides define many of the properties of host-parasite interactions. The diversity of the bacterial lipopolysaccharides is responsible for the characteristic antigenic properties of Gram-negative bacteria. For a commonly used assay system of endotoxin see also: Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay.
