dermorphin

[dermorphine]

Dermorphin is a heptapeptide with the sequence YAFGYPSamide (containing D-Ala in the second position: Tyr-dAla-Phe-Gly-Tyr-Pro-Seramide), isolated from skin secretions of the Amazon frogs Phyllomedusa sauvagei and Phyllomedusa rhodei. The peptide is derived in multiple copies from larger precursors (Montecucchi et al, 1981, 1981). Dermorphin is a very potent mu-opioid receptor agonist (Montecucchi et al, 1981, 1981). Dermorphin has been established as more selective and potent with long-lasting analgesia compared to morphine after intracerebroventricular administration in animal models, and intrathecal postoperative administration of dermorphin in humans has been reported to be more effective than morphine (Basso et al, 1985; for overview see: Hesselink and Schatman, 2018).
