This term was coined by DeCarvalho et al (1983) to refer to then biochemically poorly characterized angiogenic lymphokines. The authors suggested the existence of at least three different angiokines for various steps of capillary development, which would aid in explaining various aspects of different angiolymphoproliferative syndromes.
Angiokine 1 was thought to be responsible for the mobilization and chemotactic migration of cells.
Angiokine 2 was thought to drive local proliferation of cells.
Angiokine 3 was thought to be responsible for differentiating-morphogenic events.
