[zinc metalloproteinase B] This putative cell surface zinc metalloprotease is encoded by a gene in Streptococcus pneumoniae. The protease is involved in the regulation of a family of surface-expressed choline-binding proteins, as shown by the loss of surface expression of these proteins in a strain lacking ZmpB (Novack et al, 2000).
Knock-out mutations of Streptococcus pneumoniae lacking ZmpB are attenuated in pneumonia and septicemia models of infection. This is accompanied by significantly lower levels of one of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha (Blue et al, 2003).
