Wispostatin-1 is a bioactive fragment (see also: cryptides) derived from the WISP-1 [Wnt-1 induced secreted protein-1; Wnt1-inducible signaling pathway protein-1] gene. Wispostatin-1 [SPWSPCSTSCGLGVSTRI] corresponds to residues 221-238 of WISP-1 (WISP-1(221-238)). Wispostatin-1 has been shown to inhibit the proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro and is therefore thought to possess anti-angiogenic properties in vivo (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008). Cano Mdel V et al (2009) have reported that Wispostatin-1 inhibits ocular neovascularization in vitro and in vivo.
