This bioactive intracellular peptide, which is most likely the result of processing by the ubiquitin-proteasome system, has been identified by de Araujo et al (2014) who referred to it as pep5. The peptide is derived from from G1/S-specific cyclin D2, which regulates the transition from G1 to S phase. of the cell cycle. WELVVLGKL is present in human cyclin D2 proteins, corresponding to cyclin D2(139-144) [CCND2(139-144)] and may be considered a bioactive cryptide.
WELVVLGKL shows a two fold increase during the S phase of HeLa cell cycle and at concentrations of 25-100 muM induces
