approved gene symbol VASN.; abbr. also: VSN. This cell surface protein has been identified by Ikeda et al (2004). Vasorin is a type I membrane protein that is expressed predominantly in vascular Smooth muscle cells. The protein is known also as SLITL2 [slit-like-2], due to sequence homologies with slit.
Vasorin directly binds to TGF-beta and attenuates TGF-beta signaling in vitro. Vasorin expression is downregulated during vessel repair after arterial injury. Reversal of vasorin downregulation significantly diminishes injury-induced vascular lesion formation, which is due, at least in part, by inhibiting TGF-beta
