[herpes simplex virus UL49 protein; herpes simplex virus VP22 protein] VP22 is a structural envelope protein (301 amino acids) encoded by the herpes simplex virus HSV-1 UL49 gene (Elliott and Meredith, 1992). VP22 sequences are conserved in the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae but appear to differ in their roles in viral life cycles. VP22 homologs of Marek's disease virus serotype 1 and Varicella zoster virus appear to be essential for viral replication in cell cultures, whereas those of bovine herpesvirus 1, pseudorabies virus, and HSV-1 are not (Che et al, 2008, Dorange et al, 2002, Liang et al, 1995, Pomeranz and Blaho, 2000).
