[cytomegalovirus UL138 protein] UL138 is encoded by within the ULb open reading frame of human cytomegalovirus, which contains genes involved in regulating viral immune escape, cell tropism, or latency and is typically lost from laboratory strains but present in low-passage strains and clinical isolates. Qi et al (2009) have reported that UL138 is highly conserved in clinical strains of cytomegalovirus.
UL138 is one of few genes expressed during virus latency. Goodrum et al (2007) have reported that UL138 is required for HCMV to establish a latent infection in primary human CD34(+) cells and that it is expressed in CD34(+) cells and monocytes
