[Tyrphostin]
A collective term for a large number of synthetic tyrosine and phosphorylation inhibitors (see below) that inhibit tyrosine-specific protein kinases (Gazit et al, 1989, 1991). They are derived from Erbstatin (N-[(E)-2-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]formamide) (Nakamura et al, 1986), a compound initially isolated from Streptomyces MH435-hF3 (Umezawa et al, 1986). A frequently used erbstatin analog is methyl 2,5-dihydroxycinnamate (Umezawa et al, 1986; Isshiki et al, 1987). Hori et al (1992) have described a series of cinnamate derivatives that are more stable than Erbstatin. Erbstatin is a potent inhibitor of both non-receptor and receptor tyrosine kinases
