Tabby
tabby encodes the murine homolog of EDA (ectodysplasin A) (Srivastava et al, 2001; Ferguson et al, 1997). The oligomeric protein is a type 2 membrane protein (N-terminus inside) and belongs to the TNF superfamily of proteins. Several splice variants of the tabby protein have been described. The most common and the longest EDA splice isoforms, EDA-A1 and EDA-A2, differ by only two amino acids and bind to two different receptors. Both proteins activate transcription factor NF-kappa-B. EDA-A1 binds to EDAR (encoded by the downless gene) and EDA-A2 binds to XEDAR (Yan et al, 2000, 2002).
