A 10 kDa truncated form of thioredoxin containing the 80 N-terminal residues and lacking the redox activity of thioredoxin. TRX80 is a naturally occurring thioredoxin fragment that is found in plasma of blood donors at levels varying from 2 to 175 ng/mL (Pekkari et al, 2000).
Pekkari et al (2005) have referred to monocytes treated with TRX80 as TRX80-activated-monocytes (abbr. TAMs), suggesting that these cells may play a major role in triggering innate immune responses. This cell type resembles immature dendritic cells generated in the presence of GM-CSF and IL4 but expresses high proportion of CD14
