[tripartite motif-containing protein 5] This protein, a member of a large family of proteins containing a tripartite motif, has been identified together with many other TRIM family members by Reymond et al (2001). In databanks the protein is known also as RNF88 [RING finger protein 88]. A number of splice variants of TRIM5 have been described (Reymond et al, 2001; Brennan et al, 2007; Battivelli et al, 2011). TRIM5-alpha [tripartite motif-containing protein 5-alpha] is the best studied isoform, and its activity can be influenced by the presence of other isoforms (Battivelli et al, 2011).
