[Toll-like receptor 4 and Toll-IL1 receptor domain-containing adapter protein] TIRAP, also known as Mal [myeloid differentiation protein 88 adapter-like] (Fitzgerald et al, 2001), is an adaptor protein in the signaling pathway of toll-like receptors and has been cloned as a molecule that specifically associates with TLR4 (Fitzgerald et al, 2001). Yamamoto et al (2002) have shown that TIRAP is essential for the activation of the signaling cascade shared by TLR2 and TLR4. See also: krapfen for the fly homolog.
