[TNF-alpha converting activity] also: TNF-alpha convertase, TNF-alpha converting enzyme (abbr. TACE), TNF-alpha sheddase (McGeehan et al, 1997). The activity is now called ADAM17. This enzyme is responsible for generating the soluble bioactive form (17 kDa) of TNF-alpha from the extracellular membrane-associated 26 kDa form (Condon et al, 2001; Zheng et al, 2004). The enzyme responsible for cleaving in vitro the human 26 kDa TNF-alpha at the physiological processing site is a glycosylated membrane metalloendopeptidase.
