[Tachykinin-1] The TAC1 gene is the precursor for several peptides, called tachykinins. These peptides have a distinct N-terminal sequence, which is responsible for receptor specificity, but share a common C-terminal sequence. The TAC1 gene encodes substance P and neurokinin A (substance K) (Krause et al, 1987). Krause et al (1987) have reported the existence of three preprotachykinin isoforms encoded by the TAC1 gene. The beta and gamma isoforms encode both peptides, whereas the alpha isoform only contains the sequence encoding substance P.
