A transcriptionally active open reading frame found within the terminal inverted repeats of Shope fibroma virus. It encodes a protein related to the cellular TNF receptor. T2 is secreted by virus-infected cells. It specifically binds both TNF-alpha and TNF-beta and inhibits binding of these cytokines to native TNF receptors on cells.
The terminal regions of two other Leporipoxviruses (myxoma virus and malignant rabbit fibroma virus) also encode a closely related T2 homolog with all the features of a structural motif predicted for a secreted TNF binding protein.
