A hexasulfonated naphthylurea compound of 1429 Dalton that was used initially as a drug for the treatment of trypanosomiasis.
Suramin blocks the biological activities of a number of growth factors including interactions with their corresponding receptors and receptor mediated signal transduction processes. In some cells suramin inhibits processes involving protein kinase C. Phosphatidylinositol kinase and Diacylglycerol kinase are also inhibited by suramin.
Suramin appears to inhibit the activities of IL2 by competition for binding to the IL2 receptor. It also binds to the IL1 receptor type 1
