Stomoxyn is an antimicrobial peptide with antiparasitic activity isolated from the blood-sucking insect Stomoxys calcitrans (Boulanger et al, 2002). Stomoxyn is a peptide of 42 amino acids (RGFRKHFNKLVKKVKHTISETAHVAKDTAVIAGSGAAVVAATamide) with broad antimicrobial activity that is expressed constitutively and secreted exclusively in the anterior midgut of Stomoxys calcitrans. Stomoxyn exhibits trypanolytic activity to Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense.
Stomoxyn shows structural similarities with cecropin A from Hyalophora cecropia, suggesting a similar mode of action on bacterial membranes (Landon et al, 2006).
