SPARC
(approved gene symbol) [secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine] This protein is known also as osteonectin (abbr. ON) a protein that binds to hydroxyapatite and to collagen fibrils (Termine et al, 1981), BM-40 [basement-membrane protein 40] (Dziadek et al, 1986; Mann et al, 1987), and 43K glycoprotein (Mason et al, 1986), a protein that is secreted by bovine aortic endothelial cells in response to culture shock conditions, which stimulate their proliferation and migration (Sage, 1986).
SPARC was discovered originally as one of the most abundant non-collagenous components of bone (Bradshaw and Sage, 2001). It is expressed also in a number of other cell types
