This is an acronym derived from "spleen, mucin-containing, knock-out of lymphotoxin". The mouse SMUCKLER gene has been identified by Shakhov et al (2004) through expression profiling of spleens of knock-out mice lacking expression of lymphotoxin-alpha. SMUCKLER expression is down-regulated selectively in spleens of knock-out mice lacking either expression of lymphotoxin-alpha (TNFSF1; TNF-beta) or lymphotoxin-beta (TNFSF3). SMUCKLER encodes a transmembrane protein that is identical with Tim-4 [T-cell membrane protein 4]. SMUCKLER is not expressed by bone marrow-derived cells
