[Myxomavirus SERP1; Myxomavirus Serine proteinase inhibitor 1] SERP1 is a secreted serine proteinase inhibitor of 55 kDa encoded by myxoma and malignant rabbit fibroma poxviruses (Upton et al, 1990). Two copies of the gene encoding SERP1 are found in the inverted terminal repeat region of the virus genome (Upton et al, 1990).
The protein modulates virulence and functions as a secreted mimic of host ligands or regulators. SERP1 forms complexes with and inhibits the human fibrinolytic enzymes plasmin, urokinase, and two-chain tissue-type plasminogen activator (Lomas et al, 1993; Nash et al, 1998).
