[stress-associated molecular patterns] This term has been coined by Rubartelli and Sitia (2009) to refer to membrane-bound or secreted moieties expressed by stressed cells that signal their stressed state to other cells. Such signals act as molecular patterns and may involve the release of oxidoreductases and redox modifiers into the intercellular space, with structural and functional alterations in key signaling molecules. Such signals may overlap with DAMPs or alarmins or complement their actions (Carta et al, 2009). For important stress signals and mechanisms see also: heat shock response.
