Ranatuerins constitute a family of 9 peptides with antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus. They have been isolated originally from skin extracts of the adult American bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana (Goraya et al, 1998). Related peptides with similar bioactivities have been isolated from other Ranid frogs (Conlon et al, 2004, 2005, 2006; Ali et al, 2002; Basir et al, 2000).
Ranatuerin-1 (SMLSVLKNLGKVGLGFVACKINKQC) contains an intramolecular disulfide bridge forming a heptapeptide ring. This peptide shows the broadest spectrum of antimicrobial action with inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans (Goraya et al, 1998).
