[ribonuclease A family 8] RNASE8 has been identified by Zhang et al (2002). The protein is expressed prominently in the placenta, but not in any other tissues examined. The protein shows very low ribonucleolytic activity and the authors state that RNASE8 does not possess antiviral or antibacterial activities.
Rudolph et al (2007) have re-evaluated the antimicrobial activity of human RNASE8 and reported that the recombinant protein shows broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against potential pathogenic microorganisms (including multidrug-resistant strains) at micro- to nanomolar concentrations.
