Papilostatins are bioactive fragments (see also: cryptides) derived from the PAPLN [Papilin] gene, which encodes a proteoglycan-like sulfated glycoprotein. Papilostatins have been shown to inhibit the proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro and are therefore thought to possess anti-angiogenic properties in vivo (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008).
