PDC213
This antimicrobial peptide, found in human milk, corresponds to casein-beta(213-226) (beta-casein(213-226)) and has the sequence VTQPLAPVHNPISV (Sun Y et al, 2017). PDC213 shows antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Yersinia enterocolitica, the common nosocomial pathogens in neonatal intensive care units. PDC213 can permeabilize bacterial membranes and cell walls rather than bind intracellular DNA to kill bacteria.
PDC213 is present at high levels in human milk from women delivering preterm infants compared to those delivering term infants (Wan et al, 2013; Yan et al, 2017).
