[ Omegasome]
Omegasomes (from their omega-like shape), a term introduced by Walker et al (2008) are specialised cup-shaped protrusions from the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. They are subdomains of the endoplasmic reticulum distinct from ER exit sites, and are enriched in phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (Walker et al, 2008) and contain ULK1 [unc-51-like kinase 1] (Karanasios E et al, 2013). Karanasios E et al (2013) have reported that omegasomes can be identified by the presence of DFCP1 [Double FYVE-containing protein-1].
The omegasome membrane structures are thought to provide a platform for the expansion of the isolation membrane (phagophore), and from which at least some autophagosomes
