Neurocrescin

This factor has been isolated from chick denervated skeletal muscle (Nishimune et al, 1997). A highly homologous counterpart has been cloned from mouse brain. Neurocrescin is expressed predominantly in neural tissue and muscle. It acts as a neurite outgrowth factor (see also: Neurotrophins). The recombinant factor promotes neurite outgrowth from cultured neurons of spinal cord and telencephalon of chick embryo. The factor is secreted extracellularly after intramolecular cleavage. The truncated form is detected in denervated muscle but not in innervated muscle (Kawasaki et al, 2001).
