This anti-angiogenic drug (named AE-941) is a standardized water-soluble preparation obtained from shark cartilage (Gingras et al, 2001, 2003). It interferes with several steps associated with the development of angiogenesis through its ability to induce endothelial cell death by apoptosis, and to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and signaling pathways mediatged by VEGF.
Neovastat markedly inhibits the gelatinolytic activity of MMP-2 and to a lesser extent those of MMP-1, MMP-7, MMP-9 and MMP-13. Neovastat also inhibits the elastinolytic activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 as well as MMP-12 (
