[Nasopharyngeal carcinoma-associated gene 14] This gene has been identified in the course of a search aimed at identifying homologs of nasopharyngeal cancer-associated genes (Wang et al, 2002). The approved gene symbol is LRRC4 [leucine rich repeat containing 4]. The LRRC4 gene has been cloned by Zhang et al (2005).
LRRC4 is expressed predominantly in normal brain tissue, but it is deleted or down-regulated in primary brain tumor biopsies (up to 87.5 % in gliomas) (Wang et al, 2002). It also has the potential to suppress tumorigenesis of malignant glioma cells in vivo and cell proliferation in vitro (Zhang et al, 2005). LRRC4 inhibits proliferation of glioma cells
