Mytimacins constitute a family of at least 5 antimicrobial peptides identified in the marine mussle Mytilus galloprovincialis and are thought to play a role in innate immunity (Gerdol et al, 2012).
Zhong et al (2013) have identified mytimacin-AF (80 amino acids) in the mucus of the land-living snail Achatina fulica. The peptide shows potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria and the fungus Candida albicans and has little hemolytic activity against human blood red cells.
