Moricin is a highly basic protein of 42 amino acids isolated from the hemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Hara and Yamakawa, 1995). The terms moricin-1 (AKIPIKAIKTVGKAVGKGLRAINIASTANDVFNFLKPKKRKH) and moricin-2 (AKIPIKAIKTVGKAVGKGLRAINIASTANDVFNFLKPKKRKH) refer to two cDNAs that share 97.2 % identity in their nucleotide sequences but give rise to identical proteins (Furukawa et al, 1999). Oizumi et al (2005) have reported that the lepidopteran insect Spodoptera litura also expresses a moricin of 42 amino acids (Spodoptera litura moricin, abbr. Sl moricin). The Sl moricin sequence has 69-98 % identity to those of moricin-related peptides, antibacterial peptides
