(alternative spelling (unfortunately): Mellitin) Melittin, the main component of the venom of the European honey bee, Apis rnellifera (Franklin and Baer, 1975) is a cationic oligopeptide of 26 amino acids (GIGAVLKVLTTGLPALISWIKRKRQQamide) with a predominantly hydrophobic amino-terminal region and a hydrophilic carboxylterminal region. Melittin is a naturally occurring antimicrobial peptide, which comprises 40-50 % of the dry weight of Apis mellifera venom (Habermann, 1972).
Melittin exhibits a variety of effects on lipid bilayer membranes, such as the deformation of vesicles, the formation of channels or pores, fusion and disruption, or lysis, and has been used widely as a model peptide to study the interactions between peptides
