Drosophila melanogaster Medea, encoded by gene CG1775, is a protein required for maximal function of the Drosophila melanogaster bone morphogenetic protein homolog decapentaplegic (Raftery et al, 1995; Raftery and Wisotzkey, 1996).
Medea is a Drosophila melanogaster homolog of mammalian SMAD4 that functions in signaling through decapentaplegic. Medea is essential for embryonic dorsal/ventral patterning but is dispensable in the germline for oogenesis. In the wing primordium, loss of Medea most severely affects regions receiving low decapentaplegic
