MMP-11

[matrix metalloproteinase-11] An alternative designation is Stromelysin-3 (abbr. STMY3, SL-3, ST-3). MMP-11 belongs to the larger family of matrix metalloproteinases. The gene encoding MMP-11 has been identified originally as a gene that is expressed specifically in stromal cells surrounding invasive breast carcinomas (Basset et al, 1990).

Pei and Weiss (1995) have reported that MMP-11 can be processed directly to its enzymatic active form by the Golgi-associated proteinase, furin. MMP-11 is processed to its mature form also by PACE4, a member of a family of proprotein convertases known as furin/paired basic amino acid-cleaving enzyme (PACE) (Bassi et al, 2000).
