[malate dehydrogenase 2] also: M-MDH [Mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase] (EC1.1.1.37). MDH2 is the mitochondrial isoform of malate dehydrogenase, the enzyme reversibly catalyzes the oxidation of L-malate to oxaloacetate, reducing NAD to NADH in the process (Gietl, 1992; Davidson and Cortner, 1967; Goward and Nicholls, 1994).
Role in cancer
Liu Q et al (2013) have reported that MDH2 is overexpressed in clinical prostate cancer specimens, which correlates significantly shorter period of relapse-free survival after undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Stable knock-down of MDH2 expression in prostate cancer cell lines decreases cell proliferation
