[Mannose-binding lectin; mannan-binding lectin] MBL is a multimeric collagen-like serum protein encoded by the MBL2 [mannose-binding lectin 2] gene. MBL belongs to the family of collectins, a family of proteins in which the individual chains consist of a C-type lectin domain attached to a collagen domain via an alpha-coiled neck region. Members of this family have a dual function. They bind to carbohydrate structures and recruit other cells and molecules to destroy pathogens. (Holmskov, 2000).
