[O6-methylguanine-induced apoptosis 2] This gene, annotated as C1orf201 [chromosome 1 open reading frame 201], has been identified by Fujikane et al (2012). MAPO2 is involved the induction of apoptosis triggered by treatment with the alkylating agent N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. Knock-down of MAPO2 expression in a derivative of HeLa cells shows that MAPO2 does not affect cellular growth. However, in the absence of MAPO2 following exposure to the mutagen, the activation of BAK and caspase-3, and depolarization of mitochondrial membranes are suppressed, suggesting that MAPO2 may positively contribute to the induction of apoptosis triggered by O⁶-methylguanine. For a related gene see also: MAPO1.
