[Myxoma virus M11L] This protein was identified as an open reading frame (orf) in the genome of Myxoma virus. M11L is an important virulence factor which downregulates infiltration of leukocytes of virus induced tumors. M11L is expressed as an early gene and the M11L protein is transported to the infected cell surface (Graham et al, 1992). Deletion of the M11L gene completely abrogates the capacity of myxoma virus to cause the characteristic disease symptoms of myxomatosis (Opgenorth et al, 1992).
It has been suggested that M11L is a virulence factor the function of which is to recognize an extracellular ligand essential for the cellular inflammatory response. This virus-encoded receptor-like surface protein may thus function as a secreted mimic of cellular receptors of cytokines.
