This antimicrobial peptide, GFGCPLNQGACHNHCRSIGRRGGYCAGIIKQTCTCYRK, has been found in the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis (Tsuji et al, 2007), which is the primary vector for Babesia sp. parasites in Japan. Longicin is a parasiticidal peptide with similarities to defensins, but also displays bactericidal and fungicidal properties that resemble those of defensin homologues from invertebrates and vertebrates. Longicin inhibits the proliferation of merozoites, an erythrocyte blood stage of equine Babesia equi, by killing the parasites.
