Limitin (abbr. Lmtn in some databanks) is a protein of 182 amino acids. Oritani et al (2003) have reported the existence of a shortened variant of limitin, arising by alternative translational initiation. The protein is produced constitutively by T-lymphocytes. Limitin shows approximately 30 % sequence identity with IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and IFN-omega and is a new member of the IFN family of proteins. The protein is being referred to also as IFN-zeta (interferon-zeta; Zeta-interferon). and has been called IFNL1 [IFN-like 1] by Hardy et al (2004).
The protein was identified originally by its ability to arrest the growth or kill
