The term LC3 refers to the light chain of the two Microtubule-associated proteins MAP1A [Microtubule-associated protein 1A] and MAP1B [Microtubule-associated protein 1B]. In mammalian cells, LC3 is expressed as three isoforms, which are the mammalian counterparts of yeast ATG8 [autophagy-related-8] (He et al, 2003).
LC3A (often just LC3) refers to MAP1LC3A [Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 alpha] and is being referred to also as ATG8E [autophagy-related-8E], MAP1ALC3 [Microtubule-associated protein 1A light chain 3 alpha], MAP1BLC3 [
