This human stromal cell line (see also: hematopoiesis) has been obtained from adherent bone marrow cell layers of long-term BMC (bone marrow culture) of a hematologically normal patient. The cells have been immortalised with SV40 (Thalmeier et al, 1994, 1996).
The most remarkable feature of this cell line is its radioresistance. The cells persist as growth-arrested adherent layers following irradiation exceeding 20 Gy.
The cells have been shown by RT-PCR quantitation of cytokines to express IL1-beta (see: IL1), IL6 and IL6 receptors, IL7
