The approved gene symbol is XRCC6 [X-ray repair complementing defective repair in Chinese Hamster cells 6]. The protein has been identified as the 70 kDa subunit of the thyroid autoantigen (Ku antigen, Ku autoantigen, Lupus autoantigen p70, TLAA [Thyroid-Lupus autoantigen] which is expressed at high levels in a fraction of patients with systemic lupus erythematosis (Francoeur et al, AM et al, 1986). The corresponding human gene has been cloned by Reeves and Sthoeger (1989). It is identical with subunit 1 of ATP-dependent DNA helicase 2 [DNA helicase 2] (Tuteja et al, 1994) and has been described independently as
