The term kininogen pertains to proteins that are precursors of the potent vasodilator and smooth muscle stimulator bradykinin and bradykinin-like peptides (hence the terms bradykininogen or kallidinogen found in older references) (for historical overview see also: Hawgood, 1997; Bhoola et al, 1992). Collectively, these small bioactive peptides are known as Kinins. For a bioactive fragment derived from the kininogen D5 domain see also: Kininostatin.
Structure and function of kininogens vary extremely among different taxa of animals, in particular between mammals and amphibians (Zhou L et al, 2008). The gene encoding the bradykinin precursor is known as KNG1
