This human plasma protein, identified originally by Zhou et al (1992) in human plasma, is known also as tissue kallikrein inhibitor, or PI4 [protease inhibitor-4; proteinase inhibitor-4] (Chai et al, 1994). Kallistatin (401 amino acids) is a member of the serpin superfamily and contains binding sites for heparin (Chen et al, 2001). The protein is being referred to also as SERPINA4 [serpin peptidase inhibitor clade A member 4], which is the approved gene symbol.
