This peptide is derived from the B allele of bovine alpha-s1-casein (approved gene symbol: CSN1S1 [casein-alpha-s1]) and corresponds to the N-terminal segment alpha-s1-casein(1-23) (RPKHPIKHQGLPQEVLNENLLRF) obtained by chymosin digestion (Lahov and Regelson, 1996). The peptide is effective in vivo at concentrations that are competitive with known antibiotics and can protect mice against lethal infection by Staphylococcus aureus strain Smith. Isracidin protects mice against Candida albicans, by stimulation of both phagocytosis and immune responses. Injection of isracidin into the udder gives protection against mastitis in sheep
