INGAP

[islet neogenesis associated protein] This golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) protein has been found to be a constituent of ilotropin (a partially purified preparation of pancreatic proteins obtained after induction of islet neogenesis by cellophane wrapping) (Rafaeloff et al, 1997). It is being referred to also as Pancreatic Beta Cell Growth Factor. In other species the protein has been identified as PAP-1 [pancreatitis-associated protein-1]. The approved gene symbol is REG3A [regenerating islet-derived-3-alpha].

mRNA encoding INGAP has been identified by a differential display technique as a gene expressed in the partially obstructed (regenerating), but not the non-obstructed (non-regenerating) pancreas (Rosenberg, 1998).
